Widespread flu activity seen in St. Louis region

The St. Louis region is experiencing widespread flu activity with some deaths, but Washington University physicians say it’s not too late to get a flu shot. The deaths primarily were of otherwise healthy young and middle-aged adults not vaccinated against influenza.

WUSTL to sponsor region’s first all-girls STEM charter school

Women are underrepresented in the important fields of science, technology, engineering and math — minority women even more so. To help close the gender gap, WUSTL will sponsor an innovative new charter school: the Hawthorn Leadership School for Girls, the first single-sex STEM charter school in St. Louis.

Schael to retire after 36 years as athletics director

Department of Athletics Director John Schael, who built what is considered one of the best scholar-athlete programs in the nation, announced he is retiring after 36 years. His final day will be June 30.

NPR host highlights university’s celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The 27th annual Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration at WUSTL will include a number of free events, from lectures to performances. Michel Martin, host of Tell Me More, National Public Radio’s one-hour daily news and talk show, will deliver the School of Medicine’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Lecture Monday, Jan. 20.
